I have been a Support Worker with Eastview Housing for almost four years, working mainly at 20 Newlands Close where I support three senior adults with mild to moderate Learning Disabilities who also have varying mobility issues due to their age and health. One of our residents remains at home during the day with staff support while the other residents each attend individual Day Care placements. In the evenings the residents usually eat together and then either relax with their own interests or attend an evening social activity. At the weekends we usually have an extra member of staff on duty for several hours so that some or all the residents can go to town to do personal banking and shopping. All the residents have friends and family who are welcomed at the house when they wish to visit. My work at No 20 involves supporting each resident to lead as full and happy a life as possible. This may range from supporting them to get ready for their day to go off to Day Care looking smart, to accompanying them on a Christmas shopping trip to buy presents for friends and family. I have also been on several memorable holidays with our residents over the last four years and got to know them all very well. No two days or even no two shifts are the same at No 20 as there is always so much going on. Knowing that you are enabling the residents to enjoy their lives is what makes the job so rewarding.
